Task Design for College English CET-4 and CET-6 Listening and Speaking Preparation Based on the Flipped Classroom

Abstract:
Against the backdrop of college English teaching reform, developing students’ listening and speaking competence has become a major objective of college English courses. Traditional preparation for the College English Test Bands 4 and 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) is often teacher-centered and provides students with limited classroom time for listening and speaking practice, thereby failing to meet their individualized learning needs. The flipped classroom model reorganizes the sequence of knowledge transmission and internalization: students complete listening input and independent learning tasks before class, while classroom time is devoted to interactive practice, problem-solving discussions, and targeted instruction. Focusing on preparation for the listening and speaking components of CET-4 and CET-6, this paper develops a task-based teaching framework within the flipped classroom model, designs multistage learning tasks, and examines the model’s effectiveness and implementation challenges. The findings indicate that well-designed flipped classroom tasks can increase students’ engagement in listening and speaking practice, alleviate the shortage of classroom practice time, and help students systematically develop strategies for the CET-4 and CET-6 listening and speaking tests.
