Sustaining Dynamic Value: A Continuous Content-Updating Mechanism for Foreign Language Digital Textbooks
Wu Xiaoyang
Foreign Languages Department, North China Electric Power University
Abstract:
Digital textbooks are usually treated as digitized print: compiled once, released, and revised on a multi-year cycle. Two recent arguments complicate this picture. The first holds that a digital textbook's value is dynamic, enacted each time a learner meets the material. The second relocates the textbook from a static resource to an ongoing learning service. Neither answers the operational question: what mechanism keeps content aligned with learners and the world beyond the classroom? We propose a four-layer content-updating mechanism — sensing, curation, integration, and validation — illustrated with a Japanese-as-a-foreign-language unit. The mechanism shows how dynamic value is generated in practice, linking value theory, service models, and teachers' work.
