Abstract:

As vital teaching resources for college English courses, English literary short stories integrate linguistic knowledge, cultural implications, and aesthetic values in a concentrated manner. Conventional college English listening and speaking instruction is often isolated from literary learning and characterized by rigid teaching modes, low student engagement, and a disjointed relationship between language input and output. The Production-Oriented Approach (POA), centered on the principles of “output-driven learning, input-enabled cultivation, and selective learning,” effectively addresses the fragmentation of listening and speaking training and students’ passive learning. Based on the POA theoretical framework, this study develops an integrated listening–speaking teaching model tailored to the teaching of English literary short stories in college English. It draws on authentic classroom teaching cases to elaborate on practical teaching procedures and validate teaching outcomes. The findings demonstrate that the proposed teaching design can boost students’ enthusiasm for learning, facilitate the coherent integration of listening input and oral output, and enhance learners’ comprehensive English proficiency and cross-cultural literary literacy.
