Application of Virtual Simulation Combined with Scenario-Based Teaching in Obstetric and Gynecological Nursing Education

Abstract:
Teaching obstetric and gynecological nursing cannot rely on lectures only; students need to track maternal and fetal status, decide upon an intervention, perform it safely, and communicate with their patient and the rest of the team. However, clinical placements are unpredictable when it comes to emergency situations like postpartum hemorrhage. Practice might be limited due to patient safety and privacy issues. Virtual simulation provides an opportunity for rehearsal without putting patients at risk. Scenario-based teaching has another goal—placing students into clinical roles where they have to react to unfolding cases. In this paper, we discuss how both methods can be connected before, during, and after class. We consider aspects of course design, classroom organization, potential teaching benefits, and practical conditions required to employ this approach in obstetric and gynecological nursing.
